Before completing the FAFSA form, it is important to obtain an account username and password (FSA ID). Why? When you sign up for an FSA ID, you have to wait up to three days before you can use it to sign your FAFSA form electronically.

You and your parents (if you are an independent student) will each need separate FSA IDs to sign the FAFSA form online. Do not share FSA IDs with each other! This may cause problems or delays with your financial aid. Don’t wait!

If you are a student, you should choose the first option. Why? When you do this, some of your personal information (name, Social Security Number [SSN], date of birth, etc.) will automatically be uploaded to your application. This avoids the common error that occurs when your verified FSA ID information does not match your FAFSA information. Also, if you transfer your tax information from the IRS or sign the FAFSA form electronically, you do not need to re-enter your FSA ID.

One of the most difficult parts of filling out the FAFSA form is entering financial information. But thanks to a partnership with the IRS, students and parents can automatically transfer their 2021 tax information to the 2023–24 FAFSA using the IRS DRT. This is the fastest and most accurate way to enter your tax return information on the FAFSA form, so if you’re given the “Go to IRS” button option, use it!

When it comes to filling out the FAFSA form, you’ll want to read every definition and every question carefully. Sometimes the FAFSA form asks for very specific information that may not be accurate.

Here are some items that have very clear (but not necessarily intuitive) definitions according to the FAFSA form:

What Is A Fafsa Mpn?

* If you are a dependent student, show the value of any college savings accounts without taking student assets.

We know many parents fill out the FAFSA for their children, but remember, this is the student’s application. When it says “you” or “yours” on the FAFSA form, it’s referring to the student, so make sure you include your (student) information. If the application asks for information about your parents, it will indicate this in the question.

After you create an FSA ID, the Social Security Administration will review and verify your information (name, SSN, date of birth). If you enter a different name, SSN, and/or date of birth on the FAFSA form, you will receive an error message. This is often caused by a mistake or mixing up student information and parent information. Application of delays by triple-checking input. If your data doesn’t match, learn how to resolve this error.

The FAFSA form asks for your estimated income tax liability, not the amount of income tax withheld, not your adjusted gross income. We know it can be complicated. To avoid this common mistake, we recommend that you transfer your tax information to the FAFSA form using the IRS DRT. Or you can find out which tax line number to use to find your income tax amount. (Note: This will depend on the IRS form you filed.)

Who Will Use The Fafsa Once You Have Submitted It?

Even if you fully support yourself, pay your own bills, and file your own taxes, you are still considered a dependent student for federal student aid purposes. If so, you must provide parent information on the FAFSA

Find out what parental information you need to provide by answering these dependency status questions. If you are considered a dependent student and do not provide information about your parents, we may not process your FAFSA and/or you may only be eligible for unsubsidized loans. Learn more about what happens if you don’t fill in your parent information.

If you follow our recommendations and use the IRS DRT, most of the financial information required on the FAFSA form will be automatically filled in for you. However, the IRS DRT does not fill everything. Some numbers, including many items in the Additional Financial Information section, must be entered manually.

If you’ve used the IRS DRT, you’ll notice that some of the boxes in this section are already checked and the fields are populated with “Transmitted from the IRS.” However, other items such as “Tax-deferred Contributions to Retirement and Savings Plans” and others cannot be passed through the IRS. You must manually review each item on the list, check the box if it applies to you, and enter the appropriate amount by referring to your relevant financial records. In the case of tax-deferred payments to retirement and retirement savings plans, you can find this information on Form W-2.

Filling Out Fafsa

If you’re not applying to just one college or don’t know where you’re going, you should include more than one. Colleges can’t see the other schools you’ve added, so you must add all the colleges you’re considering to your FAFSA.

You can add up to 10 schools at a time. If you want to apply to more than 10 schools, you will need to remove one of the ten schools already listed on your FAFSA form. You can choose which school to replace with the new school. A school that is removed from the list will not automatically have access to any new information you provide after you remove that school.

Adding additional schools will not hurt your application. In fact, you don’t even have to remove the schools you decide not to apply to. If you do not apply to a school or are not accepted, the school may ignore your FAFSA form. However, you can remove schools at any time to make room for new schools.

Enter the form with your FSA ID and submit the form. This happens for many reasons – maybe you forgot your FSA ID number or your parent isn’t with you to sign with the parent FSA ID, so your application is incomplete.

Filling out the FAFSA will be easier if you gather what you need ahead of time. Here are a few items to help you fill it out.

If you haven’t already done so, create an FSA ID with your account username and password. An FSA ID is a digital legal signature that allows you to complete and update your FAFSA form, so create your own and keep it safe. Parents of dependent students must use their FSA ID to complete the FAFSA process.

How To Apply For Financial Aid

Even before you are ready to fill out the FAFSA form, we recommend that you create your account further. This extra step avoids delays in the process, especially since it can take up to three days to use an FSA ID.

Important: Do not create an FSA ID in someone else’s name. This includes parents. A parent should not create an FSA ID for their child, and a student should not create an FSA ID for their parent. This may result in delays in enrollment and FAFSA form submission and financial aid. (It’s also against the rules.)

You can find your Social Security Number (SSN) on your Social Security card. If you don’t have access to it or don’t know where it is, you can ask Social Security for a new or replacement SSN.
