Due to the closure of COVID-19, families may be eligible for food assistance benefits. These food benefits are called Pandemic EBT or P-EBT emergency meal programs. Find out more below.
How Do You Apply For Emergency Food Stamps
Because of COVID-19, children who qualify for free or reduced-price meals at school will receive additional meal benefits. P-EBT is a new and temporary food benefit to help families buy groceries as schools are closed.
Virginia Extends Emergency Snap Benefits Through January
Families with children in grade 12 who are eligible for free or reduced-price school meals – including children who attend school for free meals.
P-EBT is for all students regardless of nationality or immigration status. The only condition is that the child must be eligible for free or reduced school meals.
This amount depends on the number of children in your household receiving free or reduced-price school meals. The maximum benefit discount is $ 399 per child. You will receive one P-EBT card for all of your children (Example: If you have 3 children, you will receive one card with $ 1, 197).
Families with children eligible for free and reduced-price meals after their school closes will receive less than $ 399 per child. It depends on when your family requested free or reduced price meals or for basic meals. P-EBT benefits ($ 5.70 per day) are based on the number of school days the school is closed:

P-EBT numbers are for all eligible children in Washington, DC, regardless of their status or the status of their parents. You will not be asked about you or your child’s immigration status or nationality when you apply for P-EBT. P-EBT is not considered to be under public indictment. Families with basic meals (food stamps): Between June 28 and July 7, P-EBT benefits will be credited to the EBT card you have already used.
Families with children receiving free or reduced-price school meals: You must complete a simple application before August 31 or the beginning of the new school year (whichever is later).
P-EBT benefits are approved if the information on your child’s school application matches the child’s information on the P-EBT program with DSHS.
Snap Food Benefits
You can choose where to send your P-EBT card on your P-EBT application. If your child (ren) is approved, your P-EBT card will arrive by mail 3-5 days after approval. Due to application load, it can take up to 30 business days for your application to run.
You must apply by August 31, 2020 or before the school year 2020-21 (whichever is later).
You will receive a P-EBT card in the mail with information on how to use your P-EBT card. (See # 6 for more information on how to apply). The approval process can take longer if you are eligible for free school meals and discounts after school closures.
If your P-EBT application is rejected, you will receive a letter in the mail explaining what happened and how to appeal if you think the denial is incorrect.
Texas Families, Claim Your Child’s Pandemic Ebt Benefits
Follow the instructions that came with your P-EBT card. You must activate your card before you can use it to purchase food. To activate your card, you will call and provide the area code for the mailing address on your P-EBT application. You then create your own private PIN that you will use when you go shopping, such as a debit card.
Yes. Children can get school meals and get P-EBT. They are separate applications. P-EBT benefits do not replace meals from schools or other organizations.
13. What if I apply online and do not receive a P-EBT card or I receive a letter rejecting my application?
P-EBT can buy food in SNAP-certified stores: most grocery stores, farmers markets, some corner stores, or buy groceries online at Amazon and Walmart (depending on your region). P-EBT can not be used for:

17. What if I have questions about P-EBT and my ability to apply for a green card / legal permanent residence?
Applying for or using a P-EBT will not affect your ability to apply for a green card (legal permanent residence). Applying for a P-EBT will not affect the ability of family members here or outside the United States to apply for a green card. P-EBT is not considered to be subject to public service restrictions. If you have questions about your immigration status and P-EBT, you should discuss them with an immigration attorney or DOJ-certified representative. The Northwestern Immigration Rights Project (NWIRP) knows about P-EBT and immigration law. They can answer your questions:
18. How can low-income families who do not receive free or low-cost basic or school meals receive P-EBT benefits?
Families with school-age children who have just lost their job or income can fill out a free or reduced-price school application through your school district before June 30 and before you apply for P- EBT. You can also apply for Basic Food before June 30, online (www.WashingtonConnection.org) or by phone (877–501–2233 – DSHS Customer Service Center). If you are approved for a basic meal, you will also receive P-EBT benefits for your school-age child.
February 2023 Is The Last Month For Maximized Snap Benefits
If you are eligible for free or reduced-price meals and school meals after school closes and before June 30, 2020, your P-EBT benefits will be satisfactorily assessed.
