But the best thing you can do is plan your start. When will you start your business? What do you need to get started? Where do you work, from home? How do you get income?… Make a plan to start.
It’s really important to me to be able to support myself. I have never had the chance to get anyone’s support and in fact I have never even borrowed money from anyone. I support myself! And that’s only important to me. So when I planned to start my own business, I made sure I had savings that would last me financially for 12 months. Some people say you only need 3-6 months, but I actually suggest 12 months if possible. It takes time to get the ball rolling and it’s much easier to work towards your goals if you’re not constantly stressed about money. So to save up to start my business, I worked three jobs for a couple of months and lived on really little expenses.

You can’t expect to live exactly the same way you did when you got a Full Time paycheck every month. Prioritize and cut your expenses so you can get by on a small income. If you can generate income from your part-time job to cover your bills, you will be much less stressed about generating income for your business in these early days. I didn’t have a part-time job when I started because I moved to another city and decided to make it full-time right away with my business. And for me it was a great choice because focusing only on my business made me really productive and motivated right from the start.
So when I started my business, I had already been freelancing as a graphic designer for 4 years on the side of my day job. I already had a few graphic design clients and continued to work with them when I started – and I still have those clients. So if you have the opportunity to acquire clients from earlier times when you are starting out, it is a great way to earn income.
Last but not least, it’s a good idea to get into a creative field before you take the plunge and quit your day job. Why? Because when you start a business, there are so many other things to work with and think about, and if you have artwork or products to sell when you start, you’re more likely to generate income from your artwork than if you start your business before you’ve honed your skills.
