Choosing the right carpet size is a fundamental step when designing a room. “A rug is basically the anchor of your space,” says interior designer Tina Ramchandani.

When chosen and measured correctly, a rug will add warmth, pull your furniture pieces together, and even make a room feel larger. For open concept layouts or multipurpose spaces, rugs also help separate each area to define sections.

There are several standard carpet sizes that you may see in your search. Below, Ramchandani provides tips on choosing the right rug size for each room in your home, based on factors such as the arrangement of furniture and the size and shape of the room.

One of the mistakes that home owners often make is to choose a standard carpet and think it will work anywhere and in every room – this is not the case. In fact, rugs are never one-size-fits-all. Each room has its own set of considerations to account for when shopping for a rug.

While the couch can be the centerpiece of most living rooms, the rug is what pulls it all together. Because of this, it is important that the dimensions of the carpet allow it to fill up the main seating area.

From there, play around with the shapes. Squares and rectangles are obvious, but oval and round rugs can add visual interest. “As long as the shape supports the furniture in the room, you can have fun with it,” says Ramchandani.

Quick tip: It’s better to buy a rug that’s too big for your space and have it adjusted to fit with a rug sizing service than to buy a rug that’s too small. But please, leave rug sizing to the professionals.

Having fun with entryway and hallway rugs is something Ramchandani enjoys. “This is one area where you can use an odd-sized rug, because usually the furniture is on the side of the room,” she says.

As in the living room, the dining room carpet should match the furniture there. With tables and chairs, in particular, you want to make sure the chairs have enough room so that they stay snug on the rug when pulled away from the table.

Kitchen rugs aren’t for everyone (especially those prone to spills), but when placed in the right space, they can make a room that tends to feel cold from all the tiles and appliances, a little warmer.

Just like any other room, whether you prefer a smaller rug near your sink, a runner along your island, or a rug in the dining kitchen area, there are some rug size rules.

A bedroom rug is placed under the bed to serve as a warm landing spot for your feet when you wake up. Because of this, the size of this rug depends on the size of your bed, furniture around it, and how far under the bed you want to position it.

When it comes down to it, the rug size rule is quite simple: as long as your furniture fits comfortably on top of it, your floor has at least 12 inches of breathing room around it, and the rug’s shape echoes the shape of the furniture. room, you’re on the way to become an interior decorator.

If a larger room requires multiple rugs to define different spaces, such as in an open floor plan, the same rules apply to each different area. If so, there is no furniture on top of the rug in the room, like in the hallways and entryways, the rules are a little less specific, and you can be really happy with the size and shape.

It can add color and texture, help ground the arrangement of furniture, and even help define different areas of a large space. Getting the size and placement right is the trickiest part, though. One of the most common mistakes made is having a rug that is too small for the space or the furniture it is paired with.

To help with that, I have put together some visual guidance to illustrate what works well in the living room with some different furniture options and configurations. In some instances, you will see that there is more than one size rug that works well, so here are some additional guidelines to help you land on the right choice for your individual space.

So before we dive into what to do, let’s start with what I don’t recommend. This first example is a 7ft long sofa with 2 chairs paired with a 5ft by 8ft rug. At first glance, this may seem like an okay choice, right? But if you look closely, you’ll see that this 5×8 rug actually only allows the front legs of the sofa to rest on the rug but not the seat. If you move the chair so that the front legs are on the carpet, the whole arrangement will start to feel cramped. And just like that, the carpet feels like an island with only a coffee table on top of it and chairs and sofas jutting out of the island. Not so good after all, you see?

Now here is the same furniture arrangement with an 8ft x10ft rug and then a 9×12 rug…

So much better! The 8×10 definitely helps the furniture arrangement and will allow for some small side tables on either side of the sofa. The 9×12 also works really well in this arrangement and will allow for a larger side table.

If you have a really big room or maybe an open concept room and need to determine which area is where, a 10ft by 14ft rug can also be used and will allow all pieces of furniture to be fully on the rug. Be sure to keep a foot of open floorspace between the rug and the wall so the rug doesn’t start to feel like wall-to-wall carpet.

How To Select The Right Size Area Rug

Sectionals make rug sizing and placement even trickier because of their large size and multiple configuration options. This post would go on and on if I tried to cover every possible configuration, so I’d stick with the 100in x 100in sectional or the 94in x 58in “chaise” style sectional. With a sided corner sectional equal to this size (100″x100″), you will see both an 8×10 and 9×12 rug work well. I think the 9×12 helps balance this arrangement a little better since I’ve included the seat. Without the seat, the 8×10 would feel more proportional.

Chaise sectionals are very popular these days but since they are more like sofas with attached ottomans that come out, it can be difficult to know how to place the rug. In the case of chaise sectionals, it is especially important to consider the placement of all side tables. If the chaise end of the sectional goes up to the wall or there is someplace where it doesn’t make sense to have a side table, then an 8×10 rug is a great choice.

However, if you have a side table at the end of the long sectional, you will need a large rug to help the side table feel like it’s part of the group and not just hanging out by itself! A 9×12 rug placed along the way under the sectional allows for a side table, coffee table,
