The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, offers food stamps to those who qualify. If your income is close to the poverty line and you have dependents, you may qualify. But some people need to work to receive SNAP benefits.
I Need Food Stamps Do I Qualify
The rules can be a bit complicated, but we’ve reviewed how to qualify for SNAP benefits, even if you don’t have a disability or dependent to care for.
Snap Food Benefits
Here are the requirements to qualify for SNAP benefits, and how much you need to work to qualify.
To qualify for SNAP, you need to earn less than 130% of the federal poverty level. For an individual, the income limit is currently $1,473 per month in gross income, or $1,133 per month in net income.
Income limits also vary by household size. The more dependents you have in your household, the higher your income limit will be. And each state has its own income limits, so you’ll need to check the income limits for your state to see if you qualify.
In addition to the income limit, you must not have assets totaling more than $2,750 (or $4,250 if at least one household member is age 60 or older, or has a disability). Assets are defined as cash, investments (outside of retirement), or other accessible funds. Home equity, retirement balances, vehicles with a fair market value of less than $4,650, and income from SSI or TANF do not count.

Finally, there are work requirements that vary by state. In general, if you are aged 16 to 59 and able to work, you must register as available to work, not voluntarily reduce work hours, if offered. Get a job if you go and attend job training programs if required by your state. Able-bodied adults ages 18 to 49 with no dependents must do one of the following to qualify: work at least 80 hours a month, work program at least 80 hours a month Participate in, participate in a collection of work. and participating in a work fair for a total of at least 80 hours per month of work program hours or the number of hours assigned to you each month.
If you’re on SNAP, there are work requirements, but that doesn’t mean you have to work full-time to keep getting benefits. For able bodied, you must be available to work and take the job if offered, but there are no requirements for the number of hours you need to work. If you have a job that works at least 30 hours per week, you are exempt from any additional SNAP work requirements, and you are not allowed to voluntarily reduce your work hours.
If you are an Able-bodied Adult Without Dependents (ABAWD), one way to work that will help you qualify is to work at least 80 hours per month for more than three months in a three-year period. Benefits can be obtained. This can include paid, unpaid or voluntary work. This may also include time spent in the SNAP Employment and Training Program.
Full-time work is not required to receive SNAP benefits, but there are general work requirements you must meet.
How To Get Food Stamps Or Snap Benefits When Self Employed
Not everyone needs to work to be eligible for SNAP. Here is a list of people who are exempt from the SNAP program’s work requirements:
Finally, many states are able to waive work requirements based on state unemployment levels. SNAP beneficiaries can apply for a waiver to avoid work requirements during periods of higher than normal unemployment.
During the pandemic, the work requirement was dropped. Now that the Biden administration is lifting the emergency health declaration on May 11, 2023, the aforementioned work requirements are back in place.
This means that able-bodied individuals will need to participate in work-related programs, and individuals without dependents will need to complete the minimum required hours each month to keep their SNAP benefits.
Food Stamps: Here’s Why Millions Of Americans Will Lose $3 Billion In Monthly Benefits Starting In March
A Republican co-sponsored bill was recently introduced that could change the minimum work requirements for those participating in the SNAP program. It will include the following changes:
Although the bill has yet to pass the House or Senate, it is aimed solely at able-bodied adults who are not caring for any dependents. The increase in the working age requirement is designed to draw more SNAP beneficiaries back into the workforce, thereby reducing the overall SNAP budget.
SNAP benefits are a great resource for individuals and families who need it most, and while there are some work requirements, you don’t need to be employed full-time to qualify. There are several ways to be exempt from work requirements, and many states offer exemptions based on each state’s unemployment rate. But if you’re using SNAP benefits, you should expect to work until you qualify for a waiver.
