What Do You Need To Become A Preschool Teacher – Progressing from early childhood (kindergarten or preschool grades) to first grade can be an exciting milestone for early learners. However, for some children, the transition may be difficult. At a Parent Partnership Series seminar hosted by Ms. Neha Kaprani, Year 1 Coordinator and Teacher in Nanyang, we invited parents to share how we are supporting the transition process for young children in our care. Here is an edited version of her presentation.

Children in our early childhood classes have multiple opportunities to see the rest of the school campus and interact with older students in unit shares or assemblies. In particular, at the end of the school year, students in Early Childhood 3 are introduced to the first-grade classroom in planned preparation sessions. They also have the opportunity to meet and greet first grade teachers.
Specially Trained Teachers: First and foremost, highly qualified and trained teachers are employed at every grade level from early childhood through primary school to high school. Our teachers focus on modeling kindness and alleviating students’ fears. Our kind and compassionate teachers in our first grade classrooms help students transition with minimal fear or anxiety.
Cooperative Activities: Next, we pay extra attention to helping young students settle into their new environment. To do this, we follow several procedures:
Curriculum that focuses on inquiry-based learning: Our teachers believe that students who enjoy school not only perform better academically, but also get more out of the classroom experience. To this end, One World International School’s Nanyang campus uses the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, or IB PYP, an engaging curriculum that emphasizes hands-on exploration, discovery and play. This framework is implemented in early childhood and primary schools, so our preschoolers are already familiar with the play-based and inquiry-based learning approach. Students are encouraged to take ownership of their progress and use their imagination to solve problems. Teachers work to instill increased independence.

Enlist the help of parents and families: The educational experience at school is a collaborative effort between students, teachers, and families. Parental input is vital to student success. Parents are encouraged to talk with their children regarding the important transition from Early Childhood 3 to first grade. It is helpful for families to work with young children on independent activities such as tying shoes, dressing, and more.

“Teachers have to have an optimistic outlook,” Baharian says. “Their interactions will play an integral role in helping young children develop confidence and a positive self-image.”
Negativity is absolutely harmful and destructive in ECE classrooms. Your students will be watching you and picking up on your body language. If you approach each day with optimism and excitement, you will impact their learning (and their lives) for the better.
If students are misbehaving and the system is spiraling out of control, avoiding confrontation is not the smartest option. Great ECE teachers care about their students and discipline as an extension of that care.
Tips For Hiring A Preschool Teacher
“Sometimes when I have to ‘discipline’ a child, I remind him that if I don’t love him and care about his development, I will let his misbehavior continue,” says Karen Thigpen, a preschool teacher at New Life Academy.
Thigpen’s approach to discipline is to remind students that their teachers are there to help them grow in their academic abilities as well as personal development. “Since I love them, I have a responsibility to help them learn how to make good choices in their behavior.”
“One must have high levels of creativity,” Baharian asserts, in order to meet individual needs in the classroom. While they can all be classified as “little humans,” each of your students is an individual. The more creativity an early childhood education teacher brings to the table, the easier it is to engage them as needed.
This includes artistic creativity that you may use to make crafts, music, or recipes. But it also involves creativity to solve problems and brainstorm new approaches. Do you thrive with unexpected challenges? Are you able to explain things in more than one way?

Preschool teachers maintain a positive learning environment through enthusiasm for children, learning and teaching. Kids can tell when you don’t want to be there. ECE teachers must be ready every day to meet students with energy and enthusiasm. This doesn’t mean that introverted teachers are out of luck, they just need to be able to “chip in” when needed.
