A Visual Guide To Understanding Fafsa

“We focus on college and career readiness and all the steps it takes to get to school. And one of the things we know is a big barrier is money. And one of the biggest ways we can Let’s help them get the money they need. Going to college is the FAFSA, the Free Application for Student Aid.

The form is required for student aid such as Stafford and Parent Plus Loans with Pell Grants. But Kathy McDonald, vice president of network partnerships with the Florida College Access Network, said it’s also a prerequisite for other forms of student aid.

“Many colleges use the FAFSA to determine types of local aid, such as scholarships and grants, which are sources of aid that colleges distribute themselves.”

McDonald added that millions of dollars in aid go unclaimed each year in Florida alone because students don’t apply. Unfortunately, the FAFSA document is by no means designed to be the simplest or most user-friendly application. So ASPIRE’s Corrie Melton said a special interactive seminar on how to fill out the complex form is coming up on the evening of Monday, May 17.

In addition to Bill, we will have 10-12 financial aid specialists from FSU, FAMU, TCC, Lively and some of our schools. systems as well as answers to specific questions that students and their families are asking.”

Milton cautioned, however, that the information and instructions that will be provided during this FAFSA online seminar will be targeted to a specific audience.

It’s easier to fill out the FAFSA form if you gather what you need ahead of time. Here are a few items to help you fill it out.

How To Get More Money From Fafsa

If you haven’t already done so, create an FSA ID, which is your account username and password. An FSA ID is a digital legal signature that allows you to complete and update the FAFSA form, so make it yours and keep it safe. Parents of dependent students will need to use their FSA ID to complete the FAFSA process.

We recommend creating your account early—even before you’re ready to fill out the FAFSA form. This extra step can prevent delays in the process, especially since it can take up to three days before you can use your FSA ID.

Important: Do not create an FSA ID on behalf of someone else. This includes parents. A parent does not have to create an FSA ID for their children and a student does not have to create an FSA ID for their parents. This may cause difficulties in signing and submitting the FAFSA form and lead to financial aid delays. (Also, it’s against the rules.)

On the 2023-24 FAFSA form, you (and your parents, if you’re a gifted student) will report your 2021 income.

Since you probably filed your 2021 income tax return when the FAFSA form was available, you may be able to immediately transfer your tax information to the FAFSA form using the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT).

Steps To Completing The 2023–24 Fafsa® Form

The IRS DRT is the fastest, most accurate way to enter your tax return information into the FAFSA form. To address security and privacy concerns related to the IRS DRT, tax return information you transmit from the IRS will not appear on fafsa.gov. Instead, you’ll see “transferred from the IRS” in the appropriate fields on fafsa.gov.

You cannot use your 2022 tax information. We understand that for some families the 2021 income may not accurately reflect your current financial situation. If you have experienced a decrease in income since the 2021 tax year, you must complete the FAFSA form with 2021 tax information. Then, contact the school you plan to attend and explain and document the change in income. School officials can evaluate your situation and adjust your FAFSA form if necessary.

FAFSA questions about non-tax income, such as child support, benefit income, and veterans’ non-educational benefits may apply to you. On the 2023-24 FAFSA form, you will report information for the 2021 fiscal or calendar year when asking these questions. Find specific details for parent’s non-taxable income and student’s non-taxable income.

Even if there’s only a small chance you’ll apply to college, list the school on your FAFSA form. You can remove a school at any time if you decide not to apply, but if you wait to add a school, you could lose financial aid.

The schools you list on your FAFSA form will automatically receive your FAFSA results electronically. They will use your FAFSA information to determine the types and amounts of financial aid you may receive.

If you add a school to your FAFSA form and later decide not to apply to that school, that’s okay! The school probably won’t help you unless you’ve been accepted anyway.
