Any enrolled JD student may take a course listed as a social justice elective. However, JD students who wish to receive official recognition for completing the social justice elective on their transcript must meet the following requirements:

Master Of Arts: Humanitarian Assistance & Crisis Management (part Time Hybrid)

B) optional courses (15 units) chosen from courses in the English Common Law Department or French Common Law Department (see below for list) and

C) Completion of a major thesis in an approved social justice course or an approved social justice-directed research course. If completed as part of an approved social justice course, the paper must be worth at least 50% of the final grade for the course. A major paper completed through a directed research course must be on a topic approved by the coordinator of the Social Justice Option and assigned to code CML 3251 (4 units) or CML 3351 (3 units).

Also, students may choose to take a practicum or clinical course in a social justice-related field. Below is a list of contests in the field of social justice:

Ask the course instructor to contact the social justice option coordinator. The coordinator reviews the course syllabus and decides whether the course meets the criteria for a social justice course. These standards are as follows:

Accelerating Ethics, Empathy, And Equity In Geographic Information Science

Social justice courses critique the historical and current effects of law in creating and maintaining social, political, and economic inequality, and the potential and limitations of law as a tool for distributive and egalitarian social, economic, and political change. Eligible courses for the social justice elective include courses with a theoretical or didactic focus on systemic discrimination against women, the poor, immigrants, refugees, racial and indigenous peoples, people with physical or mental disabilities, and sexual, religious, or linguistic minorities. Junior or senior, including courses in constitutional equality and social justice claims, domestic and international human rights, or civil liberties. Courses in the Social Justice Option also include redistributive regulatory frameworks, such as labor and income security law, and content that equips students to practice law in the delivery of social justice, such as clinical legal aid and charter application courses.

Important: To enroll in the Social Justice Option, you must be currently enrolled in the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law JD program.
